James Aneke, Military Governor of Imo State was in office 13 Dec. 1993 – 21 August, 1996. Then, Navy Captain James Nwabueze John Aneke was appointed Military Governor of Imo State during the Military Regime of late Gen. Sani Abacha. He tried to ensure, there was peace and order in the state.

During his regime as a Governor, the state (Owerri) was plagued by kidnapping and ritual killings, to which he was able to control. In April, 2009, Commodore (Rtd) James Aneke joined the Peoples Democratic Party.
