He was born on November 3, 1943 in Enugu. He hails from Ovim, Isuikwuato of now Abia State. Rear Admiral Kanu, after his primary Education, attended Metropolitan College Onitsha from 1957 to 1961, and thereafter, enlisted in the Nigerian Armed Forces. He attended the National Defense Academy, Kharakvasla India, where he obtained a B.Sc. degree in 1965. He also obtained an M.Sc. in Defense Studies. D.Sc. (ABSU Honoris Causa, D.Tech FUTO Honoris Causa).
Rear Admiral Godwin Ndubuisi Kanu was appointed the first Military Governor of Imo State of February 3rd, 1976 to August 10, 1977 and later Military Governor of Lagos State. Godwin Ndubuisi laid the solid foundation for the State. he gave the State Capital its Master Plan. Built so many infrastructural projects such as Wetheral and Douglas Roads. Aladinam, Ikenegbu Housing Schemes and many Water projects were built by him. He established the College of Technology, Nekede, commissioned the State Library and the Agricultural Development Corporation (ADC).
He is married with children and plays Lawn Tennis, reading and writing.
